Hakim Mehr: Two new books titled Medicine and Management of Game Birds and Turkey Disorders and Diseases have recently been published by the Sana Poultry Health and Diseases Research Institute.
On this occasion, Hakim Mehr spoke with Dr. Jamshid Razmyar, Head of the Sana Poultry Health and Diseases Research Institute. The interview is presented below.
Dr. Razmyar, please begin by explaining the Research Institute’s objective in publishing specialized books.
One of the primary goals of the Sana Poultry Health and Diseases Research Institute is to advance specialized knowledge in the fields of avian science, poultry veterinary medicine, food security, and public health. We believe that producing and publishing reliable scientific resources—particularly in areas where Persian-language references are limited—plays a vital role in enhancing education, research, and professional practice among veterinarians, students, and stakeholders in the poultry industry.
Recently, books such as Medicine and Management of Game Birds and Turkey Disorders and Diseases have been published. What is the significance of these works?
These books address topics that have received relatively limited and fragmented coverage in Persian scientific literature. Medicine and Management of Game Birds covers a wide range of subjects, including management, nutrition, biosecurity, diseases, pharmacological treatment, vaccination, necropsy, and conservation of game birds. It serves as a practical resource for veterinarians, students, and bird breeders.
Turkey Disorders and Diseases, on the other hand, provides an in-depth examination of bacterial and fungal diseases affecting turkeys. It discusses conditions such as colibacillosis, mycoplasmosis, salmonellosis, pasteurellosis, aspergillosis, and mycotoxicosis.
Why was turkey production chosen as a specialized subject for publication?
Compared with the commercial chicken industry, turkey production in Iran is a relatively younger sector, yet it offers considerable economic and nutritional potential. At the same time, turkeys have unique characteristics regarding disease susceptibility, production management, biosecurity, nutrition, and infection control. Therefore, poultry management principles developed for chickens cannot simply be applied to turkeys without considering species-specific differences.
A specialized reference on turkey health and production can help reduce management errors, improve disease diagnosis, and minimize economic losses.
Who are the primary audiences for these books?
The main audiences include veterinary students, practicing veterinarians, avian health specialists, poultry producers, diagnostic laboratory professionals, researchers, and other stakeholders in the poultry industry. These resources can also be valuable for policymakers and investors involved in bird production, as they provide a more scientific understanding of the health, management, and economic requirements of this sector.
In your opinion, what is the most important scientific message conveyed by these books?
The central message is that successful bird production is impossible without specialized knowledge, effective biosecurity, accurate diagnosis, and scientific disease management. Today, the poultry industry faces numerous challenges, including antimicrobial resistance, infectious diseases, mycotoxins, animal welfare concerns, food safety issues, and public health considerations. Reliable scientific references help ensure that decisions are based on evidence and global experience.
What approach will the Research Institute take regarding future publications?
Our strategy is to continue publishing specialized, practical, and educational resources in the field of poultry health and diseases. Our objective goes beyond merely translating books. We aim to foster scientific development, promote a culture of professional reading, support students and young specialists, and provide credible resources that address the real challenges facing the country's poultry industry.
If you were to summarize the importance of this initiative in a single sentence, what would you say?
The publication of these books is a step toward bridging global scientific knowledge with the practical and scientific needs of our country in the areas of poultry health, disease management, and bird production.
