Hakim Mehr's Conversation with Dr. Jamshid Razmyar on the Occasion of the Publication of Two New Specialized Books by SANA Institute for Avian Health and Diseases Research
Hakim Mehr: Recently, two books titled "Gamebird Medicine and Management" and "Turkey Diseases and Disorders" have been published by the Sana Research Institute for Ornithology and Avian Diseases.
According to Hakim Mehr, on this occasion, we conducted an interview with Dr. Jamshid Razmyar, the Director of the Sana Research Institute for Ornithology and Avian Diseases, which is presented below.
Hakim Mehr: Dr. Razmyar, please first explain the goal of the Research Institute in publishing these specialized books.
Dr. Razmyar: One of the main goals of the Research Institute for Ornithology and Avian Diseases is to advance specialized knowledge in the fields of avian health, poultry veterinary medicine, food security, and public health. We believe that the production and publication of credible scientific resources, especially in areas where Persian references are limited, plays a crucial role in enhancing the education, research, and professional performance of veterinarians, students, and bird breeding industry professionals.
Hakim Mehr: Recently, books like "Gamebird Medicine and Management" and "Turkey Diseases and Disorders" have been released. What is the significance of these works?
Dr. Razmyar: These books address areas that have rarely been covered in a specialized and comprehensive manner in Persian sources. "Gamebird Medicine and Management" covers the management, nutrition, biosecurity, diseases, pharmacotherapy, vaccination, necropsy, and conservation of game birds, serving as a practical resource for veterinarians, students, and breeders. "Turkey Diseases and Disorders" specifically addresses bacterial and fungal infectious diseases of turkeys, including colibacillosis, mycoplasmosis, salmonellosis, pasteurellosis, aspergillosis, and mycotoxicosis.
Hakim Mehr: Why was the turkey chosen as a specialized subject for publication?
Dr. Razmyar: Turkey farming in Iran is a younger industry compared to commercial chicken farming, but it holds significant economic and nutritional potential. At the same time, turkeys have their own specific characteristics regarding disease susceptibility, rearing management, biosecurity, nutrition, and infection control. Therefore, you cannot simply apply all principles related to chickens to turkeys without considering species differences. A specialized book on turkeys can help reduce management errors, enable more accurate disease diagnosis, and better control economic losses.
Hakim Mehr: For which groups are these books useful?
Dr. Razmyar: The main audiences for these works are veterinary students, veterinarians, specialists in avian health and diseases, breeders, diagnostic laboratory experts, researchers, and poultry industry professionals. Of course, these resources are also useful for policymakers and investors in bird breeding, as they foster a more scientific view of the health, management, and economic requirements of this field.
Hakim Mehr: In your opinion, what is the most important scientific message of these books?
Dr. Razmyar: The main message is that successful bird rearing is impossible without specialized knowledge, biosecurity, accurate diagnosis, and scientific disease management. Today, the poultry industry faces issues like antibiotic resistance, infectious diseases, mycotoxins, animal welfare, food security, and public health concerns. Reliable scientific resources help ensure that decisions are made based on evidence and global experience.
Hakim Mehr: What approach will the Research Institute take in publishing future books?
Dr. Razmyar: Our approach is to continue publishing specialized, practical, and educational resources in the field of avian health and diseases. Our goal is not merely to translate books; the main aim is to create a scientific discourse, promote a culture of specialized reading, support young students and professionals, and provide reliable resources to solve the real-world problems of the country's poultry industry.
Hakim Mehr: If you had to summarize the importance of this activity in one sentence, what would you say?
Dr. Razmyar: The publication of these books is a step toward bridging global knowledge with the scientific and executive needs of the country in the field of avian health, diseases, and management.
