Virology

The Virology department is equipped with incubators for embryonated egg inoculation, candling equipment, cell culture systems, specialized centrifuges, and molecular and serological instruments. The main diagnostic approaches of this unit include:

  • Virus isolation and propagation in embryonated eggs through inoculation into the allantoic cavity, yolk sac, and chorioallantoic membrane;
  • Cell culture on Chicken Embryo Fibroblast (CEF) cells and specific cell lines (MDCK, Vero);
  • Final confirmation through serological tests (HI, ELISA, VNT) and molecular assays (Real-Time PCR, RT-PCR).
Detectable diseases include Newcastle Disease, Infectious Bronchitis, Avian Influenza, Gumboro, Marek's Disease, Infectious Laryngotracheitis, Reovirus, Avian Adenovirus (EDS), Circovirus (PBFD), Polyomavirus, Bornavirus (PDD), Duck Viral Hepatitis, and Encephalomyelitis. This unit plays a vital role in surveillance, prevention, and control of viral diseases in the poultry industry.
